First day of school with type 1 diabetes

The new school year most of the times bring excitements to families with children. Children usually shop with their parents for their school supplies. They get excited with the idea of choosing their new backpack with their favorite cartoon character and their first day outfit for school. My family could not have this pleasant chaos this year. One week before my youngest daughter completed her sixth birthday, she was diagnostic with a disease called type 1 diabetes with which the body is insulin dependent. Type 1 diabetics are different than type 2 diabetes because the body has a hormone deficiency which means pancreas has stopped producing insulin. Type 1 diabetes can happen to anyone at any time; it doesn’t have to do with how much sugar you eat or your weight for you to be diagnosed. This diagnosis added more school supplies to her list, besides her backpack I bought a type 1 diabetes emergency kit. At the first week of school, many families have worries about their children and how they will adapt. My first worry was if the school nurse will attend the school and if she will take care of my daughter in case of any emergency and if she is trying not to scare the poor child increasing her stress about her new way of life. As a mother, my worries are continuous. I am trying to make this big change in my daughter’s life as smooth as I can so she can not feel different other students.
